Turkish Airlines Baggage Fees & Policy [2022 Update]

Turkish Airlines works on a weight system for certain international destinations and a piece system for others, so check out the list of destinations below before traveling so you know what you’re eligible for.

Journeys to and from the U.S. work on the piece system and the checked allowance is 2 bags across economy and business classes with a generous 70 pounds (32 kg) for the latter.

If you join Turkish Airlines’ frequent flyer program Miles&Smiles, you’ll be permitted to take an additional piece of checked luggage once you hit Elite or Elite Plus status.

Personal: 5.9 x 11.8 x 15.7 inches (15 x 30 x 40 cm)
Standard: 21.6 x 15.7 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 cm); the maximum weight for each item is 17.6 pounds (8 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

Infants are permitted 1 piece of carry-on not exceeding 17.6 pounds (8 kg)
Strollers are not permitted in the cabin

Stroller Gate Check Policy

A collapsible stroller can be transported free of charge as checked luggage either at the check-in desk or at the gate.

Turkish Airlines no longer presents its baggage allowances or fees in table format and passengers are required to use the airline’s baggage calculator to check the allowance for a specific journey. Piece allowance is applicable for flights to and from Angola, Argentina, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Canada, Chad, Colombia, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Japan, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mexico, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South America, Sudan, U.S., and Venezuela.

Adult and child passengers are allowed to bring a maximum of 2 bags as free checked luggage with a maximum linear size of 62 inches (158 cm).

Business Class: 70 pounds (32 kg)
Economy Class: 50 pounds (23 kg)
Infant passenger: 1 bag (50 pounds (23 kg)) with a max linear size of 45 inches (115 cm) and 1 stroller or pushchair

Excess Baggage

For flights to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, excess baggage charges per kilo are ₺20 ($1) for soldiers of the Turkish Peacekeeping Forces.

For passengers who benefit from the student discount, the baggage fee is ₺20 for every kilo.

To benefit from these discounts, baggage must be purchased at a Turkish Airlines sales office.

Can I Prepay for Baggage?

Turkish Airlines does allow passengers the ability to prepay for excess baggage. This can be done by logging in to your booking on the Turkish Airlines website or the app.

        I imagine your TV exceeds carry-on luggage size allowances so all of the luggage you reference would need to be checked. Ghana is a piece concept destination with an allowance of 2 x 23 kg bags, so be sure to check your ticket as you mention a 40 kg allowance. If you have been allocated 2 x 23 kg bags, then you would need to purchase a third piece which would cost $220 and could measure up to 158cm.

        The charge for an extra bag with Turkish Airlines between the US and Pakistan should be $250. The price difference between business class and economy class will depend greatly on the day and time that you are flying. You can view the price difference on the airlines’ website or on a site like Google Flights. Pakistan Airlines planned to open the only non-stop route between NYC and Islamabad starting in May or 2020, but it seems this has been delayed due to COVID-19.

    The United States routes have a “piece” concept, so the weight isn’t that important. You can take up to 23 kg per piece without a surcharge or 23-32 kg per piece at an additional fee of $80 on top of excess baggage fees. Perhaps the best way to do this is to transport it via freight on DHL or another vendor.

  Hi Nahida – we need a few more details here to help you out, like what fare type you purchased, if you’re flying domestically or internationally, where exactly you’re flying (to/from what regions), is your weight over the 32KG across both bags or is it two bags combined that weigh over 32kg, how much are you expecting to be over, etc?
  
  Aside from all that, whether or not you should pay extra is fairly subjective (i.e. up to you) but whether or not the airline will make you pay extra (if it’s just a kg or two) is completely up to the ticketing agent and how strict they’re feeling. Since they charge per-kilo extra I’d say they’re going to make you pay for it and will likely be pretty strict.

  Yes that is correct – the 20kg would be in addition to your baggage allowance. I have attached a screenshot of where this is mentioned. Just be mindful of the maximum 32kg weight of one bag – Turkish Airlines won’t accept a piece heavier than this so you will need to distribute across multiple pieces to use the full allowance.

  Turkish Airlines has a maximum weight allowance of 8kg for a piece of carry-on so you would risk having to check this item. You are also permitted to bring on board a personal item such as a handbag, so you could distribute some of the weight into that item.
  
  Checked allowance is 20kg, so you would incur excess baggage fees for the additional 14.5kg you would be taking. Cape Town is region 5 and Malta region 2 and the cost per kilogram is EUR22. The total excess cost would be EUR319.

  Hi Salta, according to Turkish Airlines website for excess baggage fees, when it comes to excess for international flights the fee is assessed per each kg of extra baggage on a regional concept. According to that same link, London is Region 4 and Almaty is Region 2 and the fee for 1kg of excess weight would be 17EUR. To find the cost of another bag of 30kg you would simply take 17EUR x30 = 510EUR.
  
  This seems a bit excessive… So, since we are not Turkish Airlines, we would suggest calling their customer service line to confirm.
  
  To answer your second question, as you can see from the “Can I Pre-pay for Baggage” section above, Turkish Airlines does NOT allow passengers the ability to pre-pay. Therefore, passengers must pay any excess baggage fees during the check-in process at the airport.

Turkish Airlines does state on its baggage policy that ‘Free baggage allowance may vary depending on reservation class and route’ and some travelers have reported higher checked allowances for Economy on certain routes. If your ticket states a 30kg allowance (with no mention of this applying to checked and carry-on luggage) then you should be ok but we recommend you contact Turkish Airlines to confirm this. The route you are taking would work on the weight concept so the allowance for Economy would be 20kg total weight. This could be split across 2 x 10kg bags if you choose to.

  Hi Abdi! First, please be informed that we are not Turkish Airlines, we are Upgraded Points – a website that published points and miles based articles as well as additional travel-related articles such as this baggage fee post.
  
  That being said, we did include the link to Turkish Airlines’ definition of regions above in the post. If you go there, you’ll see that Manchester is Region 4, and Mogadishu is Region 5. Turkish Airlines charges fees on excess weight PER KILO. So, if you wanted to buy 20 extra kilos, excess baggage should cost you ~$30.50 USD per kilo or $610.
  
  This seems a bit extreme so you may want to go ahead and call Turkish Airlines’ reservation/customer service number and inquire with them directly.

  Hi Bob, your research seems right to me! From looking at Turkish Airlines’ baggage policy it seems flights to Canada work on their ‘piece system’ and that Toronto is Region 1, so for one extra bag (your third), I would expect to pay $160.
  
  Just a note – I’m not sure if you have a round trip flight scheduled but baggage fees are usually applied on a one-way charge basis, so you would also pay this fee upon your return flight.

Using Turkish Airlines’ excess baggage table, Houston is classed as ‘piece region 1’ and Budapest is ‘region 2’, which would be USD170 for an extra 23kg bag.

When it comes to detailed issues that arise outside of basic published policies, it’s always best to call the specific airline in question and speak with their customer service directly.
  
  Each airline has its own written (and sometimes unwritten) policies for situations like this and some are more strict than others. I would ASSUME, that they won’t allow you to do this as most airlines are usually pretty particular on how they divide baggage weight/fees per fare purchased but it’s worth a phone call!
  
  Regardless of what Turkish Airlines Customer Service reports, we would love it if you checked back in here and let us know if they did/did not allow you to do this! Sorry to not be of more help…

To avoid the risk of excess luggage charges, we would recommend you contact the airline directly to query this and get something in writing to show at the airport if this is permitted. The same applies to the baggage size question. We would assume the size would be the same as the piece concept, but Turkish Airlines will confirm this for you.

  Hi Prateek – we cannot find anywhere on the Turkish Airlines website that lists fees for an “oversized” bag. This likely means, as a rule, they do not allow any bags over 158cm to be checked in.

  I’m not aware of your circumstances (what cabin you’re flying in or if you have frequent flyer elite status) but Turkish Airlines permits passengers to bring 20kg of luggage if traveling in Economy and 30kg if traveling in Business Class. You mentioned 40kg of luggage, is this what is printed on your ticket? If you have baggage that exceeds your allowance then there is always the chance with any airline of being charged excess baggage fees.
  
  For hand luggage you are permitted 1 standard carry-on weighing up to 8kg plus 1 additional personal item. No weight allowance is specified for the personal item. You mentioned having a laptop, handbag and a standard carry-on piece – just be aware that you are only permitted 1 personal item in addition to your standard carry-on bag.

According to Turkish Airlines’ baggage t’s & c’s, for piece concept routes, they charge a fee of $80 USD for bags weighing 23-32 kg. So as long as your first 2 bags do not exceed 23 kg then you would be charged $195 USD + $80 USD = $275 USD.

Assuming your parents are flying in Economy, the combined weight that has been stated is unusual as a carry-on item can weigh up to 8 kg. Unless it’s allowing 2 kg for the personal item but the weight is undisclosed on Turkish Airways website and should just be a small item such as a handbag or laptop.

I really want to have her stroller with as far in as possible to the gate/street. I have heard from others that you have to take a stroller and deliver it to cabin staff and get it immediately when you have to leave the plane. I can’t see what the goals and kg must be. I have a stroller of about 10kg and the measurements folded: approx. 97 x 59.5 x 25 (LxWxH). However, infants in their strollers can be brought as far as the plane entrance, where guardians can hand over the stroller to staff. At the end of the flight, the stroller will be unloaded by our staff and given back to the guardian.”
  
  Turkish Airlines’ website does not reference sizes for collapsible strollers. As they don’t, I’m sure your measurements would be fine, but you might want to give them a call to double check as it exceeds the normal max linear dimensions of a checked item.

  That route uses the weight concept with 20 kg of free luggage permitted for Economy passengers. Additional luggage is charged per kilogram and is calculated by the region of departure and region of arrival. India is region 5 and Germany is region 3, so excess baggage is charged at $27 per kilogram. If you require an additional 26 kg, then you’re looking at around $702.

Can I leave our checked luggage on the SFO/IST/BUD first leg “checked”? We are laying over to meet a friend for dinner that evening, arrive ~17:00 then depart for BUD next day at 18:00. All we need for the layover is our carry-ons and would prefer not to lug around the big items.

  We can’t find any information on special allowances for seafarers on the Turkish Airlines website so we advise you give them a call to confirm. If you booked your flights on 1 ticket then your allowance to the United States would be 2 x 23kg (flying Economy) so if they do not have any special requirements for seafarers, then you would need to distribute 2 kg of weight into your 2nd bag to avoid excess charges.

  Hi Julio, are you flying economy or business? As you can see in the outlined regions listed above, Madrid is Region 5 and Athens is Region 1 so your allowance is assessed with Turkish Airlines weight system. If you’re economy you’ll be allowed 20kg, if biz you’ll be allowed 30kg.

  I’m afraid it is unlikely that Turkish will allow that as each passenger can only bring 2 bags weighing up to 30 kgs combined. In the case you’ve described, either you or your husband (whoever the 2nd bag is assigned to) will be over their baggage allowance and have to pay overweight charges.
  
  If you want to bring just 3 bags I recommend you have 30 kgs in one bag, and 15 kgs in each of the remaining two.

In our travel document, it is printed that as follows:

1 hand luggage 8kg (55x40x23cm)

1 hand luggage 8kg (55x40x23cm)

Therefore, combinedly we are permitted to carry 60kg luggage. We are family and will be traveling together. Our point is that two baggage each weighing 30kg is a bit difficult to handle. Instead, it would be easier to handle if we can divide the total of 60 kg into three baggage, for example, 20+20+20kg or 22+20+18Kg.
Can you please confirm us whether we are allowed to do so?

What I am confused about is that, for NY being in Region 1, 190 USD is asked for 1 extra baggage, but there is also the notice above saying “Where the maximum baggage weight is 50 pounds (23 kg) for an economy passenger, a fee of $80 will be applied for passengers with a piece weighing 50-70 pounds (23-32 kg).” So am I going to pay 80 USD for 1 extra baggage or 190 USD? And can I not do it at the airport during check in?

But since the carrier dimensions are 202cm, it might be categorized as an oversized item and be charged an oversized fee. Turkish Airlines does not disclose the charge on its website, so you would need to give the airline a call to determine this.

I’m flying from Budapest, Hungary to Khartoum, Sudan. Budapest is on the “weight” list (Region 2) but Sudan is on the “per piece” list. Which list applies when calculating excess baggage fee from Budapest to Khartoum?

Also, excess luggage cannot be added online (I keep getting an error message with the note to go to the sales office – which are all closed now). If the online portal is not working, and the phone rep is telling you the price will be the same as the airport then I would imagine that is correct. Turkish Airlines makes no mention on the excess baggage section of its website that extra fees apply for purchasing at the airport.

      The checked allowance for that route is 2 x 50 lb bags. If you have any additional items that exceed the checked or carry-on allowance, you’ll be subject to excess luggage charges of $220 per additional piece.

  When Turkish Airlines refers to the ‘first’ being free, it means the first set of equipment. For example, if you packed 2 snowboards into your snowboarding bag, you would be charged for the 2nd piece of equipment. For international flights, you can take a snowboarding bag with 1 set of skis or 1 snowboard, 1 helmet, and 1 pair of boots for free. The weight of the bag must not exceed 23 kg.

I am flying from Podgorica (TGD), connecting in IST, to Washington IAD. Based on your other comments it would seem that I can bring a 23kg bag. But on the “manage my booking” part of the airline’s website it doesn’t say anything about any checked bags. Only:
