Hi JB,

If you open the Amex Gold card or Amex Green card before you close your Amex Platinum card then there would be no need to transfer the points preemptively. As long as you have at least one active card that earns Membership Rewards points you will not lose your points when you cancel the Platinum card.

I recently retired I am planning to close my Platinum Amex and open either a gold or green Amex. Assume I should move my points, have about 400,000 or I’ll lose them when I close the card. I travel from Houston to London twice a year. Am I better transferring them to United or to British Airways?

Generally, you need AA to release SAAver award availability to be able to book with a partner (which can be hard to find sometimes), so you likely need to check each time or set up alerts with Expert Flyer.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the info. So, is there an overriding logic as to which flights are available or does one have to check each time? We are (somewhat) frequent travelers from Chicago to Italy, Rome specifically.

I have a long standing relationship with AA and their Advantage program. I’m trying to understand if it makes sense to switch to this Amex program, extending global coverage while providing good ORD to FCO access.

Yes, that is correct. However, not all AA flights are available via British Airways, so it is best to confirm availability before transferring points.

First of all, super article! Thanks!!!

I wanted to be sure I’m understanding and following the the information correctly: So, even though American Airlines isn’t one of the “transfer partners”, I can transfer points to British Airways and then use these to purchase flights with AA, thus still having full access to any AA flight and destination. Am I correct or are there some limitations?

It is likely because there is no available award space on the date you are searching for. If you plug in different dates you should availability start to appear.

Very interesting article. I’m a bit confused though on how to find some of these routes. For example, when searching British Airways for Miami to Lima, nothing comes up. Is that because that route is no longer offered, or because there’s some trick to finding it that I haven’t figured out yet?

Hi Charles,
Yes, you can book a river cruise with Amex points. Just go through the booking process as usual (you’ll only see the cash cost at this point). Then when it’s time to enter payment information, you’ll be able to select the “Pay with Points” option.

“You will want to be careful who you fly with to avoid fuel surcharges, but flights on Air Berlin and Aer Lingus to Europe will generally have low surcharges.” Indeed Air Berlin has no fuel surcharges, but that is because it went of business long before your January 15, 2020 update. Enjoyed flying business class on that airline many a time back in the day.

Hello Stanley and thanks for your question. Unfortunately, each card earns a different type of reward. The Gold Card earns Membership Rewards Points and the Blue Sky earns Blue Sky points. So no, you cannot transfer your points from your Gold account to your Blue Sky account.

Great post, thanks. One minor correction: I went to transfer points to JetBlue, and the exchange is 1.25:1, not 1:1. Still nice though.
